Living the Dream

For many years I dreamed of being a part of an integrated Healing Center where I worked with other like-minded team members and practitioners. A few months ago, that dream became a reality when I joined Plastic Surgery Specialists to develop their Optimal Wellness Center. Now it may seem peculiar that a healing or wellness center would be associated with a plastic surgery practice, but it actually integrates very well.

Let me explain. Most of the patients who seek medical care want to feel better, or they want to prevent illness or slow down the aging process. The patients we see at PSS (Plastic Surgery Specialists) are no different. Our patients, too, want to feel better and one way to feel better (about yourself) is to look better. They are concerned about preserving their health and slowing down the aging process.   I had a patient tell me recently that when she comes in for a little Botox, it is her "feel good day". It's one thing she does to feel better about herself and offset the aging process that stress has accelerated in her life.

At 49, she's doing a little something for herself that gives her a little a lift, literally and figuratively! Still, she wanted to consult with me because she's been going through a rough time for the last few years. She's depressed, irritable, suffers from insomnia, has little interest in sex, feels exhausted all the time, and keeps gaining weight. No matter how hard she tries, she can't lose the 15 "peri-menopausal" pounds. To make things worse she received very little help from her primary physician. She was given sleeping pills to help her sleep and Xanax for her anxiety, anti-depressants for her depression and birth control pills for her hormonal imbalances. No wonder a little Botox went a long way for her! At least there was something that she could do to help herself feel better.

Compounding all this was a sense of despair. No one was offering her any hope or a sensible treatment plan to alleviate her annoying symptoms and restoring her to health and vitality. The end result of this mainstream standard of care is a basically healthy woman taking a host of prescription medications and no one addressing the underlying cause(s) of her symptoms. This woman is not ill. She is, however, exhausted, hormonally out of balance and nutritionally deficient. With a little tweaking with her diet, adjusting her hormones with bio-identical hormones, treating her adrenal fatigue and providing her with hope and ongoing emotional support, she is on the road to regain her vibrancy and her energy, and most importantly, her sense of her Self and confidence.

So granted Botox or a face lift or liposuction isn't going to balance your hormones, fix your diet, or cause you to lose weight, but those procedures can help you feel better about your self and provide a sense of hope and renewal. They can also help you feel more empowered by taking charge of your life. And, addressing the underlying causes of hormonal imbalances, weight gain, depression, anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, lack of energy and diminished sexual drive will also help you feel and ultimately look better.

Plastic surgery isn't for everyone and not everyone wants to make changes to their lifestyle choices. But, the beautiful thing is that at Plastic Surgery Specialists and the Optimal Wellness Center, we offer you a whole lot of choices and will work together to bring you the best possible outcome.
